A 37-year-old man from Greenland has been reported missing after attempting to kayak across Tunulliarfik Fjord between Narsarsuaq and Qassiarsuk in southern Greenland. Greenland’s police announced that the man set out on the five-kilometer kayaking trip on Friday afternoon. When he did not arrive as expected, his family alerted the authorities on Saturday morning.
An extensive search operation was quickly initiated with assistance from the Arctic Command (Arktisk Kommando) and volunteers. The Arctic Command, which is responsible for military operations in and around Greenland and the Faroe Islands, deployed a police vessel to the water while Air Greenland provided a helicopter to search the area from both the air and the water.
During the search, the man’s kayak and personal belongings were discovered in the fjord west of Narsarsuaq, which was the starting point of his journey. Despite the intensive efforts and broad geographic coverage, the search and rescue teams were unable to locate the man alive.
Police have communicated that due to a lack of further evidence, the search has been suspended. His relatives have been informed of the situation. The circumstances leave many unanswered questions regarding what exactly happened to the missing man.
