Queen Margrethe of Denmark has been hospitalized at Rigshospitalet following a fall on Wednesday evening at Fredensborg Palace. Lene Balleby, the communications chief of the royal household, has stated that the Queen is doing well under the circumstances but will remain in the hospital for observation. There is currently no further information available, but the royal household will provide updates as soon as there are new developments.
The fall and subsequent hospitalization come just days after the Queen attended an official event in Rungstedlund, where she awarded the Rungstedlund Prize. Although Queen Margrethe abdicated in January, she still carries out a number of official duties. When the Queen announced her abdication in her New Year’s speech, she explained that a previous back surgery had caused her to reconsider her role. The back surgery, which took place in February 2023, was her second; the first occurred 21 years ago when she was 62 years old.
Following the 2023 surgery, it was necessary for the Queen to cancel several official engagements. It is still unclear what impact her current hospitalization will have on her future schedule. However, it is already confirmed that her planned participation in the 75th anniversary of the Department of Archaeology at Aarhus University on Friday has been canceled.
In the past, the Queen has had to cancel events multiple times due to back issues. In 2013, arthritis forced her and Prince Henrik to cancel a state visit to Chile, and in 2016, back problems prevented her from presenting the H.C. Ørsted Medal, which honors significant contributions in the field of science.
