A 78-year-old man has died after being struck by a vehicle whose driver subsequently fled the scene on Saturday evening. The police are now seeking witnesses, particularly two specific individuals. The incident occurred on the Ydre Ringvej (Outer Ring Road) in Fredericia between 5:00 PM and 5:20 PM. The man was hit by a red Skoda, and the driver, a 23-year-old man, left the scene of the accident. He was later arrested the same evening and initially charged with negligent bodily harm, driving without a valid license, and leaving the injured party.
The Southeastern Jutland Police (Sydøstjyllands Politi) are still investigating the matter and have just released a press statement requesting assistance from witnesses who may have seen the red Skoda before, during, or after the incident. The police are particularly interested in speaking with two witnesses who were captured on surveillance footage near Egumvej 58 just after the driver fled. This includes a pedestrian and the driver of a blue vehicle.
Deputy Police Inspector Arno Rindahl Petersen from the Southeastern Jutland Police stated that they would like to get in contact with these specific witnesses, as well as anyone else who may have information about the case. Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact the police at phone number 1-1-4.
The 23-year-old driver has been released after his arrest but remains charged in the case. It is still unclear whether the charge of negligent bodily harm will be upgraded to involuntary manslaughter, following the unfortunate death of the 78-year-old man due to his injuries.
