MONACO – Jannik Sinner, the newly crowned U.S. Open champion, has introduced his new coaching team after dismissing his previous team members due to a doping controversy. In an Instagram update on Monday, Sinner welcomed the new members to his team: Marco Panichi as the fitness coach and Ulises Badio as the physiotherapist. Both have previously worked with tennis star Novak Djokovic.
Additionally, Sinner will continue his collaboration with his osteopath, Andrea Cipolla. “Welcome to the team, Marco and Ulises,” Sinner wrote on Instagram alongside a photo with his new coaches.
In March, Sinner revealed that he had two positive drug tests for steroids, but he was not suspended as it was determined that the banned substance Clostebol had entered his system inadvertently. This occurred during a massage by his former physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi. Sinner explained that his former fitness coach, Umberto Ferrara, had purchased a spray containing the steroid which was given to Naldi for an injury to Naldi’s finger. During the treatment, Naldi did not wear gloves, resulting in the substance being transferred to Sinner.
The doping case was kept under wraps until it was announced last month, and despite the scandal, Sinner managed to secure victory over Taylor Fritz in the U.S. Open final. Prior to the tournament, Sinner had announced that he had dismissed Naldi and Ferrara.
Panichi and Badio are now officially part of Sinner’s team and will accompany the two-time Grand Slam champion to the upcoming tournaments in Beijing and Shanghai.
