Naomi Osaka ends partnership with coach after disappointing US Open performance

Naomi Osaka, the former world number one, has announced that she will no longer be working with her coach Wim Fissette. This decision follows a disappointing performance at the US Open more than two weeks ago, where the 26-year-old player was eliminated in the second round.

Osaka, who has won two out of her four Grand Slam titles under Fissette’s guidance—specifically the US Open in 2020 and the Australian Open in 2021—has previously collaborated with the Belgian coach. This marks the second time they have chosen to part ways.

In an Instagram story posted on Friday evening, Osaka expressed her gratitude, stating: “4 years, 2 Slams, and a lot of memories. Thank you Wim for being a fantastic coach and an even better person. I wish you all the best.” Currently, Osaka is ranked 75th in the world.

Fissette began his association with Osaka just before the start of the 2020 season. They initially separated in the summer of 2022 but resumed their collaboration last year when Osaka returned to training after her maternity leave. In a Saturday Instagram post, Fissette reflected on their time together, noting: “In 15 years on tour, this was one of my best years, working with amazing people. From every defeat, we worked harder and better and grew a lot. We were very close to a breakthrough.”

Following the US Open, Osaka decided to “move forward with a new path,” Fissette added. “I accepted that and know that we finish this second period with many good memories and gratitude for having built her way back.” At Flushing Meadows, Osaka lost to Karolina Muchova with a score of 3-6, 6-7 (5) in the second round. After the match, she commented: “It’s a little tough because I take these losses really personally. It sounds dramatic, but I feel like my heart dies every time I lose.”

Fissette has previously coached players such as Victoria Azarenka, Kim Clijsters, Simona Halep, and Angelique Kerber.
