Swedish director’s film “The Girl with the Needle” chosen as Danish Oscar entry.

Magnus von Horn, a Swedish director residing in Poland, has received exciting news that his film “The Girl with the Needle” has been selected as Denmark’s candidate for an Oscar nomination. Von Horn expresses immense pride in having reached this stage with the film, attributing its success to the dedicated team that worked on it. The Oscar committee has nominated the film as the best Danish contender, and the official nominations will be revealed on January 17 of next year.

The film, which is in Danish and directed by a Swedish filmmaker, underscores the significance of international collaboration within the film industry, according to von Horn. He is optimistic about the film’s cross-border potential and believes that nationality is secondary as long as the story and quality remain the focus.

“The Girl with the Needle,” starring Vic Carmen Sonne and Trine Dyrholm in lead roles, is set in Copenhagen at the end of World War I. The film follows the journey of a young factory worker named Karoline, who struggles to survive after becoming unemployed, pregnant, and abandoned. She encounters Dagmar, who is behind a secret adoption agency.

Although the film will have its Danish premiere in January next year, it has already been screened in several other countries, and von Horn has noted that the story has resonated with audiences in various locations. He believes that the film, much like science fiction, reflects the modern world in many ways and emphasizes the importance of its themes.

There is still a considerable journey ahead for the film to potentially secure an Oscar, as each country submits one film for the Best International Feature Film category. A shortlist of 15 films will be announced on December 17, serving as the basis for the five final Oscar nominations.

Von Horn prefers not to speculate on the film’s chances for nomination but expresses gratitude for the recognition it has already garnered. He notes that each time the film receives attention, it increases the likelihood that even more people will hear about and view it. This, he stresses, is the most important aspect.
