Copenhagen experiences increasing safety, but certain areas are lagging behind. A new safety survey from the Municipality of Copenhagen shows that citizens of Copenhagen have never felt safer when out and about in the evenings and at night. According to the survey, four out of five Copenhageners feel safe during these hours, which is the highest level measured in the last 15 years. General safety has also increased significantly, with 88 percent of the capital’s residents feeling safe in their neighborhoods, the highest level since 2016.
Copenhagen’s Lord Mayor, Sophie Hæstorp Andersen, states: “No freedom without safety. Therefore, Copenhagen should be a safe city for everyone – regardless of where you live and at what time of day you move around.” She adds that she is proud that safety has increased both generally and in the evening and night hours. The survey shows that men generally feel safer than women when moving around after dark, but the difference is decreasing.
Safety, however, varies across the city’s different neighborhoods. In five out of thirteen districts, fewer than 85 percent of residents feel safe. These districts are Christianshavn, Bispebjerg, Inner Nørrebro, Brønshøj-Husum, and Amager East. A significant factor affecting safety in these areas is the fear of motorcycle gang and gang activities.
Sophie Hæstorp Andersen emphasizes the importance of continued prevention: “There are still areas where too many Copenhageners feel unsafe. Therefore, it is crucial that we continue to prevent organized crime and maintain the good efforts we have built up over the years.” The Municipality of Copenhagen continues to work on creating a safe city for all citizens, and the new results show a positive development, although there is still room for improvement in certain parts of the city.
