Inger StĂžjberg undergoes emergency surgery during EU election campaign

Inger StĂžjberg undergoes emergency surgery in the middle of election campaign. Inger StĂžjberg, the leader of the Danish Democrats, underwent emergency surgery on Thursday to have her appendix removed. The operation took place in the midst of the intense EU election campaign, as StĂžjberg woke up in the early hours of Thursday with severe abdominal pain. In a post on Facebook, StĂžjberg explained that she had to change her plans for Thursday, which originally included distributing flyers in Randers, Silkeborg, and Skive. Instead, she spent the day at the hospital in Aalborg to undergo the operation. StĂžjberg reports that the operation went well and she expects to be discharged later on Friday. “Therefore, I hope to be back on the streets with our lead candidate, Kristoffer Storm, again tomorrow, Saturday,” she writes, adding with a touch of humor: “Best regards Inger – now without both ankle monitor and appendix.”

The reference to the ankle monitor stems from her previous conviction in the impeachment case regarding the illegal separation of asylum-seeking couples, which resulted in a 60-day prison sentence that she served with the ankle monitor. StĂžjberg has played an active role in Kristoffer Storm’s election campaign, even though she is not a candidate in this election. Her image is visible on his campaign posters, and together they have presented a migration policy proposal focusing on both internal and external borders as part of the campaign’s messages. This is the first time the Danish Democrats are participating in a European Parliament election since the party was founded in 2022. The election will take place on Sunday.
