Danish Priorities in the European Parliament Election: Focus on Environment and Climate
A new survey conducted by Epinion reveals that environment and climate are at the top of Danish citizens’ agenda in the upcoming European Parliament election. Despite the current debate on Ukraine and immigration policy, the survey, published by Altinget, shows that a whopping 43 percent of the surveyed Danes consider environment and climate as one of the most important political issues. The survey, which included responses from 1,076 individuals, also highlights that security and defense policy closely follow with 41 percent citing it as one of the most significant areas. Crime and terrorism come in third place with 36 percent of respondents’ votes.
Participants had the opportunity to choose three out of 12 presented topics that they believe should have special political focus. Søren Damsbo-Svendsen, a political scientist at the University of Copenhagen, expresses surprise that climate continues to dominate Danish concerns. He refers to a similar survey from February where climate was also highly prioritized, despite security policy being a significant topic of conversation in Denmark since then.
“It is interesting and surprising that Danish voters have this continuity, where the green area is at the top, and where almost half of the voters point to this issue,” Damsbo-Svendsen stated to Altinget.
